SPSS Licence Conditions

Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh
The following conditions apply to the software products (collectively called 'SPSS') licensed to Monash University by SPSS Australasia Pty Ltd.
  1. Monash students cannot install the software on privately owned computers. Students who wish to use SPSS products at home must acquire (i.e.purchase) licences from SPSS or an SPSS reseller (e.g. Monash Bookshop).
  2. The software cannot be installed on computers owned by Hospitals or any institutions other than Monash University, even if a computer is solely used by Monash staff and/or students.
  3. Software is to be used at Monash University for teaching, administrative and non-commercial research purposes only.
  4. Staff and students may use the software on computers owned, leased or controlled by Monash University.
  5. Monash staff and students are not permitted to make copies of the software.
  6. Monash staff and students are not permitted to distribute the CD or licence code.
  7. Monash University staff may use the software on personal computers which are owned, leased or controlled by them at their principal residence and/or on their own laptop computers, provided the software is used only for Monash University related research or study.
    • The licence is only valid while the owner of a computer is associated with Monash University.
    • Staff electing to use these products on a personally owned or leased workstation must undertake to remove this software from any such workstation on disposal of the equipment, termination of the Site License Agreement or termination of employment with Monash University, whichever occurs first.
  8. The software is licensed, proprietary, copyrighted property owned by SPSS Australasia Pty Ltd.
Monash University, as the licensee, annually pays a licence fee to enable it to make a limited number of copies of the software available for use by employees.
Any commercial or profit making use of the software is strictly prohibited; the software will be used for Monash University projects only.
  9. SPSS requires details of each and every SPSS Authorised end-user for audit purposes.  Where the software is distributed via Novell, details of each end-user is recorded automatically by ITS.

However, for manual installations, the Faculty IT staff will be required to keep accurate and up to date records of every SPSS installation within the Faculty. This requires that each request for the SPSS installation or code upgrade must be made separately to allow Faculty IT staff to log the details in the Faculty's SPSS database.

Details of end-users will be required periodically by Monash University for audit purposes.

How to cite SPSS in your publication/thesis :

From the SPSS website: http://www.spss.com/corpinfo/faqs.htm
" For most of our products, you can get the complete product name, version or release number and date of creation from the "About . . ." dialog box that appears under the "Help" menu. For example, if you have SPSS for Windows, you might see this:
SPSS for Windows
Release 11.0.1 (15 Nov 2001)

You can then write a bibliographic citation as follows:
SPSS for Windows, Rel. 11.0.1. 2001. Chicago: SPSS Inc.

If you are referencing material from our Web site, please refer to the terms and conditions on http://www.spss.com/terms.htm.
You do not need permission from SPSS Inc. to reference our products.
