VPN Information

What is a VPN?

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network; it is a means of connecting ot a network reliably and safely. In the wireless world, it provides the following services:

  1. Privacy - VPN encryption means that data travelling from your wireless device to another cannot easily be read by anyone else
  2. Security - VPN's provide protection from many forms of attack
  3. Authentication - confirmation that the other mobile device you are communicating with is who it really says it is, and vice versa

Why do I need to use the VPN?

Access to many Monash services and systems require the use of the VPN when using mobile devices, such as SAP, Staff Services and Callista, for the reasons listed above.

If you plan to do any banking or will be transmitting personal information over your wireless connection, using a VPN, or at least some form of encryption is heavily recommended; this point cannot be stressed enough.

How do I connect to the VPN?

You must install the VPN client software in order to use the wireless network. The Monash VPN client is compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux Operating Systems. If you have a Pocket PC device, then you must purchase a suitable VPN Client.
