Monash Backup Solutions

Please note that since computer hard drives are mechanical devices, they will ALL eventually fail (regardless of the age of the computer).  A failure occurs when a hard disk drive malfunctions (for various reasons) and the stored information cannot be accessed.

Desktop Services strongly recommends storing Monash data on a Monash data server (e.g. Novell).  The advantages of storing Monash data on a server is that your data is secure, backed up, accessible from any computer with Internet access and can be shared.  While not as cheap as an external hard drive, the data server solution is much more reliable and flexible than a computer hard disk, which provides a single point of data loss.

If you need advice on server backup solutions, please log a request with us in Jobdesk:

If you decide to keep Monash data on your laptop, please ensure that you backup regularly and check the reliability of these backups regularly by doing test restores of random data.

Also, you should keep your backups secure and in a separate location to the source data.
