Bachelor of Medical ScienceProjects are available in all Specialties. Outstanding research training opportunities are available in the Department of Surgery. PostgraduateThe Department of Surgery is the focus for postgraduate surgical training with surgical teaching, skills training and regular audit meetings. The Marshall Prize in Surgical Training Skills Surgical Simulation LaboratoryA basic and advanced skills and surgical simulation laboratory has been recently established in the Department to cater for both undergraduates and postgraduate surgical trainees. To date particular emphasis has been placed upon basic surgical principles, laparoscopic surgery and orthopaedic surgery. It is planned to broaden the scope of the facility to surgical simulation in the near future. Frankston Hospital Registrar Research Prize and Tyco AwardThe Frankston Hospital Registrar Prize and Tyco Award will be awarded for the best research project submitted. A symposium is conducted in late November each year. Professorial Surgical RoundsThese hour long meetings are held on a weekly basis (Wednesday's at 5.30pm) with presentations from all surgical units within Southern Health as well as from a broad range of guest speakers. The first half of the year focuses on HMO/Basic Surgical Trainee education. Each unit presents on common conditions, procedures and post-operative complications encountered in that speciality. An introduction to possible research projects available within that unit is also provided. The second half of the year is devoted to surgical audit and the presentation of topics of interest by each Southern Health surgical unit. |
