Teaching
Cabrini Hospital has been involved in undergraduate teaching since the early 1980's. Currently the Cabrini Monash University Department of Surgery participates in the undergraduate MB BS program under the supervision of Professor Adrian Polglase.
The surgical teaching program at Cabrini is co-ordinated by the Clinical Dean, Mr Paul McMurrick, through Cabrini Research and Education – the Cabrini Institute. Associate Professor Michele Levinson is Assistant Clinical Dean. She is responsible for co-ordinating the undergraduate General Medicine Programme.
Until 2005, students rotated through Cabrini Hospital for elective 6 or 8 week terms. In 2006, with development of Cabrini Clinical school Cabrini delivers core curriculum to the third year MBBS. 3rd Year Monash University Medical Students, who come to Cabrini for a 12month placement, have 6 months of Medicine and 6 months of Surgery.
The teaching program involves problem-based learning, a clinical skills development year and formal assessment.
Bedside teaching and learning: The students commence their time at Cabrini by "shadowing" a Registered Nurse for two nursing shifts. The nurses and students view the experience favourably. Following this, more than 20 clinicians participate in a clinical skills education program. Comprehensive physical examination and history taking skills are taught for each system of the body. The medical students are given this opportunity to build on existing knowledge and skills from years 1 and 2.
