Rural Health in the Undergraduate Medical Degree (MBBS)In 2002, the University began a new five year medical degree (previously six years). As part of the new curriculum, students are required to spend time in a rural area. In years 1 and 2 medical students are allocated to various sites around Victoria where they undertake a range of activities. These activities give students some insights into the lives and work of people in rural areas. The different locations around Victoria give students a diverse picture of the meaning of "rural".
Student evaluations have shown that one of the major contributing factors for students deciding to undertake their clinical years in a rural setting is the positive experience they had in their Year 1 and Year 2 Rural Placements. Participating in the programAs a person living in the rural community or working as a practitioner you can play an important role in the program. Your participation helps to expose medical students to rural life, the local health and community services, primary industries or the experience of practising as a rural health practitioner. Your community will have a profound impact on the learning experiences of these students as they prepare for their professional lives. Further informationCarolyn Vaughan POSTAL ADDRESS: |
