PhD Program
The multi-disciplinary academic environment focused on rural health teaching, learning and research available at the School of Rural Health provides an excellent intellectual and scholarly environment for you to pursue your research interests.
The Research Strategy for the School targets the national research priority areas promoted by the Australian Government. A major focus of the rural health research program is to undertake evidence-based research to inform government policy and programs, particularly in the areas of:
- mental health;
- the health of special needs groups such as older people; and
- the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders;
- population health and determinants of rural health status and behaviour;
- models of sustainable rural health services, including interprofessional collaborative practice and integrative medicine
- medical education, social determinants of health and rural community development - and on other projects which are directly relevant to rural communities;
- inter-professional and community-based education and training of rural health practitioners;
- rural health workforce recruitment and retention;
- clinical pathways and evidence-based management of complex chronic diseases in rural areas;
- rural health policy and program evaluation
The School maintains strong research collaborations with the State and Commonwealth governments, University Departments of Rural Health, and a broad range of health service providers, professional organisations and community stakeholder groups. It has rural sites throughout Gippsland and in Bendigo.
We have a strongly emerging Postgraduate Research Program with students from medicine, health and social sciences. The School has a strong history of attracting PhD scholarships and is particularly interested in applications from students who have a 1st class honours or equivalent academic qualifications.
