Profile of a postgraduate student

Matt Mason – Master of Rural Health (Coursework & Minor thesis stream)

Matt Mason

Current work : as a  Registered Nurse
Location: Bairnsdale Regional Health Service as the Infection Control Nurse.

Professional Background

I commenced my Nursing career after dabbling in Marine Biology, Biomedicine and the Ambulance Service in Queensland. My first position as a nurse was in the Trauma/Orthopaedic ward at The Alfred hospital followed by a period in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit. During my time at The Alfred I commenced a Graduate Diploma in Remote Health (Nursing) through Flinders University with an aim to working as a Remote Area Nurse. Following the Intensive Care Unit I worked at the Cardinia Community Health Service based in Pakenham where my focus was on male and youth health and the needle and syringe exchange program (a very different environment to the ICU). My studies continued and I left Pakenham to take up a position with Nganampa Health Council as a Remote Area Nurse in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands in South Australia.

Minor Thesis Work

My research is looking at practices around Informed Consent by Australian Remote Area Nurses. Informed consent is relatively new to the nursing profession as traditionally we have done what the Doctors have asked us to do and patients have accepted this because the Doctors told them they needed it. There is now a need for nurses to gain consent before providing care to their patiens however there has been little research into how nurses have managed to do this. Whilst working as a Remote Area Nurse the lack of a common language, limited resources and a different view on the disease process made gaining any recognisable form of informed consent based on an equal power relationship impossible for me. This has played on my mind ever since and led to this being my research focus in hope of providing some insight into this issue for other nurses and policy makers.
