Following her formal education, Helen taught in Secondary Colleges within the Melbourne and Latrobe Valley regions. In 1996 she commenced work with a team of researchers studying Parkinson's disease within Monash University (Gippsland Campus) her participation involved data management and analysis of material for the research. When this research migrated to the University of Melbourne she assisted with the establishment of the team at that location. In the few years prior to recommencing work at Monash she was employed in local industries, also increasing her database skills.
