Dr Katie Vasey

Biography

Katie obtained her first degree in Social Anthropology with Development Studies from the University of Sussex in England in 1999. In 1999 Katie returned to Australia (as she gained permanent residency status in 1995) to pursue her postgraduate studies. In 2000, she obtained a Graduate Diploma in Public Health (Tropical Health) from the University of Queensland. In 2007, she completed a PhD at The University of Melbourne on the emotional wellbeing and belonging of Iraqi refugee women who resettled in rural Australia. Since joining Monash University in mid 2006, Katie has worked as a research fellow with Professor Manderson and Dr Devva Kasnitz, (University of California, Berkeley) in a cross-disciplinary research project documenting the social history of the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH). As of January 2008, Katie will be involved in a research project exploring the interrelationship between immigration, parenthood and identity with Iraqi and Cambodian women in Australia, with Professor Manderson, Professor Liamputtong and Dr Hoban.

Teaching

Katie has been involved in teaching qualitative research methods to post graduate students within the Social Sciences and Health Research unit. In May 2007, she was one of the facilitators of the Continuing professional development training for FARREP (Family and Reproductive Rights Education Program) workers in Melbourne. In September 2007, Katie was involved in the qualitative research methods workshop at Monash University.
