Professor Jennie Ponsford
Professor Jennie Ponsford has an MA in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Melbourne and a Ph D from La Trobe University on the subject of attentional deficits post-head injury. As the former manager of the Psychology Department at Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital (now Epworth Hospital), where she was employed between 1982-1999.
Professor Ponsford has had broad experience in the field of traumatic brain injury. She has conducted extensive research investigating outcomes following mild, moderate and severe head injury. She has also been the recipient of several large grants as chief investigator on studies investigating outcome following mild traumatic brain injury in adults and children, fatigue and sleep disorders following traumatic brain injury, and an ongoing study examining outcome following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, exploring predictive factors and early intervention strategies to reduce long-term disability. Findings from these studies have been published in numerous journal articles (as listed).
Professor Ponsford has also written/edited two books on the management of head injury, Traumatic Brain Injury - Rehabilitation for Everyday Adaptive Living, published in 1995 by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, U.K. and Cognitive Rehabilitation. From Neurobiology to Clinical Practice in 2004 by Guilford Press, New York. She is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and serves on the Editorial Boards of five international journals: the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, Brain Injury, Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, Neuro-Rehabilitation and the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation.
Professor Ponsford is an outcome consultant neuropsychologist for a multicentre randomised trial for decompressive craniectomy in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (The DECRA Trial)
Professor Ponsford has served on the Governing Board of the International Neuropsychological Society and the International Brain Injury Association (current) and is Past-President of the International Association for the Study of Traumatic Brain Injury. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment.
