Dr Bhensri Naemiratch

Biography

Bhensri Naemiratch is a medical anthropologist. Her primary research interests relate to nutritional related to health and illness especially chronic illness. She has conducted ethnographic research on experience of chronic illness and disability in Thailand, Lao and Myanmar. She is current working with Professor Lenore Manderson on the RESILIENCE Project, which is a multi-site, collaborative program of research, investigates chronic illness and physical disability in Australia and four Southeast Asian countries, and exploring the emotional and lifestyle impact of Type 2 diabetes in rural Italians, Asians and Anglo Australians.

Collaborations

Apr 2003 – on going RESILIENCE Project funded by the Australian Research Council, Chief investigator Professor Lenore Manderson (The University of Melbourne). The aim of this project is to explore the social experience and cultural perceptions of disability, consider how contextual and environmental factors affect individual functioning and disability, and explore the consequent disadvantages and marginalisation of individuals and their family.
February 2006 – on going Diabetes and Depression project, funded by Beyond Blue, Chief investigator Professor Lenore Manderson. The project describes and analyses social aspects of depression and chronic illness (type 2 diabetes) among CALD groups
