Southern Mental Health Research Seeding Grants
Southern Health is supporting new research in mental health through the provision of Mental Health Research Seeding Grants, intended to encourage new mental health research and new researchers in small-scale projects including preparatory work towards applications for external funding.
Two to five small grants are available each year ranging from $2,000 to $5,000. Personnel employed in any mental health services within Southern Health are eligible to apply.
Applications open in April and close late June each year.
The 2007 successful applications were:
- Chief investigator Debbie Hooley: Narrative explorations of patients experiences from the PARCS recovery model. $5000. Debbie Hooley leads this group, which includes Michael Silikens and Merle Arendze from the CAT/PARCS staff.

- Chief investigator Dorrie O’Connor: Southern Health CAMHS community case load index tool evaluation. Dorrie O’Connor leads this group which includes Dr Dion Rudskin and Diana Russo.

- Chief investigator Tim Brewster: Exploring a model of Group Work in Community Mental Health. $2000 Tim Brewster leads this group, which includes Vrinda Edan, also Claire Jones and other Dandenong Continuing Care Team Staff

- Chief investigator Matt Gregory: Evaluating the risk of osteoporosis for people with serious mental illness and instigating lifestyle changes to deal with the risk. $5000 Matt Gregory Leads this along with Krishna Vaddadi, Alain Binette and Kate Beel from the Middle South CCU

- Chief investigator Carolyn Simms: The Impact of Hospitalisation on Recovery from First Episode Psychosis. $2000 This involves Banksia inpatient Unit (Carolyn Simms), P Block (Michael Wong) , and also the RAPPS team (Ro Dowling)
