Registrar Training

Southern Synergy provides support to the Southern Health Post Graduate Psychiatry Training Committee and its Steering Group, and the Director has overall responsibility for ensuring continued professional accreditation status of the program. The training scheme concluded routine triennial inspection processes during 2006, with many positive comments during this process regarding the progressive improvement of training opportunities through recent years.

Each year the Southern Health Mental Health Registrar training scheme has places for up to seven incoming first year trainees. All the necessary positions can be guaranteed for these trainees entering to complete the required experiences within the college training structure.

This training structure has recently been substantially overhauled by the RANZCP. There has been a wholesale shift of emphasis from the College towards modern community mental health practice, so now there is emphasis on understanding of the consumer agenda, population health perspectives, and towards practical understandings of the range of collaborative processes that support mental health service delivery. These changes are something the senior staff involved in training at Southern Health have welcomed and embraced wholeheartedly. As a group of supervisors the consultant team at Southern Health are positively engaged with the new training structure and are working with new groups of trainees through what we believe will make a further improved training experience.

Psychiatry Training at Southern is of high quality, with an extensive program of seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, and facilitated or taught courses as well as a wide range of job positions at basic and advanced levels and supervision opportunities. There is full commitment of Southern Health to this training program including commitment of the resources needed to ensure that supervision is delivered to RANZCP requirements and usually above that level.

Further information on the training program can be found by downloading the applicant information material through the following link, also by emailing or phoning the centre; we will be happy to put interested doctors in touch with staff at Southern Health who can let you know more about the training opportunities we have on offer.
