Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Sciences - Community Mental HealthWebsite: Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Sciences - Community Mental Health This course provides mental health practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills in contemporary mental health practice in Australian settings. The course is studied part-time normally over two years, delivered through the off-campus mode and has a curriculum that is applicable to community mental health practice in all jurisdictions. Entry is open to graduates of nursing, social work, psychology, medicine, psychiatry, occupational therapy or other allied health-related disciplines, with relevant experience in a mental health setting, or other setting providing services to people with mental illness. Those working in case management positions in community mental health settings will find the course particularly relevant. As well, those working in disability support sectors or non clinical mental health settings will find the course most useful. Core and specialist skills and knowledge areas enable graduates to undertake a broad range of vocational and academic challenges and provide the life-long skills necessary to lead and achieve in their chosen careers. Students graduate with a thorough understanding of the spectrum of community mental health practice in Australia, from policy and planning considerations and population-based interventions to individual clinical and rehabilitation interventions and family and community support. There were forty-two students undertaking the course in 2006. More than 70% of these worked in clinical mental health settings; the remainder worked in non-clinical settings such as psychiatric disability support, consumer advocacy, and consumer consultation. These proportions reflect the nature of the contemporary service system in community mental health and the influence of the National Mental Health Policy over the last decade or so. The course is conducted part-time over two years by off-campus learning. Students complete four core units in the first year and four elective units in the second year. Course management is located at the Southern Synergy base in Dandenong. Associate Professor Brendan Murphy is the course coordinator assisted by Dr Frances Shawyer as the course Manager. The course structure and objectives, and the unit descriptions can be found on the web in the 2007 Postgraduate Handbook. Core units
