About the Program

Time for a Future is a community based, adolescent depression treatment research program, currently funded by beyondblue: Centre of Excellence in Depression and Related Disorders. The program is directed by Professor Bruce Tonge, Associate Professor Neville King, Dr David Heyne, Dr Michael Gordon and Dr Leanne Rowe. The program aims to compare medication, cognitive behavioural therapy and a combination of these therapies in the treatment of 12-18 years olds with depressive disorders.  The program incorporates two separate clinics, known as Clockwork: Time for a Future in the rural city of Geelong (involving Clockwork Young People's Health Service and Barwon Health CAMHS) and Berriga: Time for a Future, situated in the metropolitan suburb of Frankston (involving Frankston CAMHS).  Each clinic has a Reference Group that was consulted in the development stages of the program and has assisted in promotion and protocol development.

Time for a Future has attracted much local interest with over 250 telephone enquires and promotional articles have been published in The Geelong News and Frankston's The Independent.  To date, a total of 149 young people and their families have been seen by the program with 119 entering treatment.

A further aspect of the Time for a Future program involves the training of GP's, psychologist, social workers, and other professionals involved in the care of young people in the assessment and treatment of adolescents with depression. Participants attend a series of four workshops after which they can be involved in the project by providing therapy to young people and their families.  To date a series of workshops have been conducted to date involving GPs from Geelong, Barwon  region, Frankston, Rosebud and Mornington Peninsula.
