Mastering Moods
- a Depression Treatment Program for Adolescents
The program offers a comprehensive assessment and treatment of young people aged between 12-18 years who are experiencing depression. Depression in young people can present in different ways, including loss of interest in usual activities, persistent low mood, irritability, anger, fatigue, loss (or gain) of weight, difficulties with sleep, feelings of guilt and helplessness. If a young person’s depression is left untreated it can have serious consequences for social and academic functioning and may lead to long term psychiatric problems.
Our program aims to improve treatment outcome by using cognitive behavioural therapy with a particular focus on self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, or the confidence in one’s ability to effectively manage life’s challenges in the future, can be applied to managing one’s moods.
The inclusion of treatment strategies designed to boost self-efficacy offers the potential to improve treatment response and the maintenance of gains. Mastery of skills and tasks is an experiential strategy that also can improve self-efficacy, and this will form a vital component of the program.
This program is funded by beyondblue: the national depression initiative
