The Voices Clinic

The Voices Clinic is a specialist psychological treatment service for people who hear voices or have a diagnosis of a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia.

The Clinic provides up to 12 sessions of one-to-one psychological treatment.

Bulk-billing under the Medicare items for clinical psychology services is available.

What we offer help with

We specialise in helping people with the experience of hearing voices.

We may also help with:

  • other unusual experiences
  • anxiety and paranoia
  • recovery and relapse prevention

In the first appointment, we will help the person to identify and prioritise goals for treatment and decide whether it would be useful for them.

Therapy is provided in addition to current treatment. People seen within the clinic continue to have medication and other aspects of their treatment managed by their current doctor and/or mental health team.

Coming to the clinic

In order to come to the clinic, we require a referral from either a GP or Medicare psychiatrist.

If you are interested in coming to the clinic, please discuss this with your doctor or case manager.

If you have a private (Medicare) psychiatrist they can refer directly to our service. Otherwise we will need a referral from your GP as part of a mental health care plan – your case manager may be able to help with this.

To refer to the clinic

GPs: Please complete a mental health care plan (Medicare item 2710) and forward a copy together with a referral form or covering letter.

Private psychiatrists: If you have seen the patient under Medicare, please complete a referral form.

Other mental health workers: Medicare require a record of either a GP mental health care plan (Medicare item 2710) or private psychiatrist assessment, and a signed referral from that practitioner. In most cases, the patient’s GP will need to complete a GP mental health care plan in order to make a referral – see above.
