Introduction

Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought - Szent-Gyorgi

I am very pleased to invite you to read the brief overviews of our current research.

The explosion of technology in recent times with a growing body of information arising from the areas of genomics, proteomics and increasingly detailed brain imaging techniques mean that we can now "see" more human biology than ever before. In this exciting era of neuroscience discoveries, there is a greater role for clinical researchers to integrate such discoveries with "new thinking" to improve the quality of life for people with severe mental illnesses. Developing new treatments and refining existing treatments for devastating illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression form part of our ongoing work. As clinical researchers, we are in the privileged position of being able to collaborate with laboratory based scientists and then develop ethical ways in which to translate recent discoveries across the clinical setting. Working directly with people with mental illness continues to focus our attention on issues that touch everyone affected by mental illness. In this way our scientific excitement, often peaked by recent discoveries, is sharply focussed by the human clinical reality, as we attempt to bridge these two approaching domains.

At The Alfred, we are in a unique and exciting position to integrate the many excellent basic science findings with clinical psychiatry goals. As clinical researchers we are always reliant upon the good will and enthusiasm of patients and clinicians. We need you! I welcome your comments and questions at any time and hope to foster your research ideas. We are based on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Old Baker Building. Our telephone number is 03 9076 6564, and our fax number is 03 9076 6588.

We aim to continue to produce world class research through mutual respect, understanding and energetic endeavour.
