The mission statement of APRC is to conduct world class psychiatric research with equality, respect and understanding. Equality between the researcher, the person experiencing the illness and their carers is a very important aspect, and one that APRC strives to maintain in our work. Respect for individuals experiencing mental illness is another important value of APRC. We respect the achievements of our clients, who against incredible odds are able to reach significant goals. By respecting the people who agree to participate in our research, we learn more about what our research should focus on and about what really matters to the individual experiencing the illness. Understanding the difficulties faced by our clients is the third part to the APRC mission statement.
We do not do research on "schizophrenics", we conduct research in collaboration with people suffering from schizophrenia and other illnesses. This important distinction means that hopefully we will be able to deliver real clinical research results that can make a difference to people's lives. Currently the success or failure of a research unit is based on publication rates in selected international journals and by funding from prestigious bodies, but APRC believes that real research should be measured by whether a person's life can be improved in quality. Therefore, APRC aims to conduct clinical research, with the continued collaboration of people experiencing the illness, their carers, and the clinical staff.
