Affliated Research Centres

Characterised by research with strong social relevance and a high level of involvement in clinical practice, the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine has an increasing number of affiliated research centres, illustrating the success of this research approach. The Centres include:

  • Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (APRC)
APRC acts to coordinate and facilitate all research that is performed within The Alfred Hospital Department of Psychiatry, with the primary aim of developing new treatments and refining existing treatments for devastating illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression. Clinical researchers at the APRC collaborate with laboratory based scientists to develop ethical ways in which to translate recent discoveries and developments within clinical settings. Working directly with people with mental illness assists in focusing attention on issues that touch everyone affected by mental illness.
  • Centre for Developmental Psychiatry & Psychology   (CDPP)
CDPP is active at a number of locations: Monash Medical Centre; Monash University Clayton Campus; Alfred Southern Health Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service; Maroondah Hospital; and the Centre for Rural Mental Health in Bendigo and Traralgon. CDPP provides research and teaching in the field of developmental psychiatry and psychology with a particular focus on child, adolescent and family mental health.

  • Southern Synergy-Southern Mental Health Adult Research, Training and Evaluation Centre
    - based at Southern Health Mental Health Services, Dandenong Hospital.
The centre is dedicated to activities aimed at both teaching/education and research/evaluation, and exists to champion research, knowledge and understanding in mental health care. The Centre is able to combine a professional training centre with the capacity to research clinical interventions. This combination promotes the development of training packages for clinical psychological interventions that can then be worked with in research. Epidemiology and health services research also undertaken within the Centre can then guide how to bring these interventions into the field, and how much benefit they might bring to the wider community.

  • Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science (CFBS)
The newly established Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science is Australasia's leading centre for excellence in the areas of forensic mental health and forensic behavioural science research, teaching and practice development.
