Explanatory Statement

This study deals with people's attitudes towards their body. Many people are concerned with being overweight or underweight and often feel compelled to engage in dieting or exercise to attempt to change this. In some extreme cases the excessive concern for thinness is associated with serious eating disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa. It is therefore an important topic of psychological research to understand the nature of this social pressure to attain an ideal body shape, and how it is related to other aspects of behaviour such as diet and exercise.

The current study asks you to make a judgement of your current body shape by selecting a figure from a series of different body sizes. You are also asked to make other judgements about what you would consider to be an acceptable body size. You will also be asked to provide details on your age, sex. You are not asked to provide your name. Participation is open to all individuals aged 16 or above, whether or not you are enrolled in PSY11.

Your participation is purely voluntary, even for students enrolled in PSY11. The details you provide will be combined withthose of other participants and made available to students for completion of this laboratory exercise. No identifying information about any individual will be included in this combined data.

If your web browser is capable, data may be sent in by using the forms provided in the questionnaires, alternatively you may wish to submit your results by post or fax.
