About us
MONARC was established in 1999 for the International Year of the Older Person. MONARC is based at the Kingston Centre (315 bed facility based in Cheltenham which specialises in rehabilitation and function restoration for adults of all ages as well as providing aged residential care and aged mental health services. and has three divisions: the Academic Unit of Geriatric Medicine (AUGM), the Aged Mental Health Research Unit (AMHRU), and the Clinical Research Centre for Movement Disorders and Gait (CRCMD&G). Each division is autonomous and retains its own identity. They are headed by Monash University Professors Barbara Workman, Daniel O’Connor, and Robert Iansek respectively.
MONARC’s charter:
- The research activities of MONARC will be directed towards providing fundamental new knowledge and understanding through research into diseases associated with ageing and neurological disorders.
- MONARC clinician researchers will promote the rapid transfer of the results of clinical research into clinical management.
- MONARC will encourage and conduct high quality research which translates to quality of care and addresses gaps in health service delivery.
MONARC’s vision:
- MONARC will become recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in research into diseases associated with ageing and neurological disorders.
- MONARC will attract and recruit high quality clinician researchers.
- MONARC will have efficient governance of its processes and will provide advice on evidence based practise within Southern Health, the wider community and Government.
- MONARC will become a hub for research into ageing across Southern Health and Monash University and collaborate with its external partners.
- MONARC will continue to be successful and will expand with competitive grant funding by being responsive to identified clinical needs.
- MONARC will have the capacity to partner with a range of organisations including Monash University, Government and a range of health providers.
- MONARC will provide education in Geriatric Medicine, Aged Psychiatry, Movement Disorders and Gait and Neurology.
