Jannique van Uffelen is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Primary Health Care, Primary Care Research Unit (PCRU), at Monash University. Within the PCRU, she has roles in both the Healthy Ageing Research Unit (HARU) and the Problem Gambling Treatment and Research Centre (PGRTC).

Jannique has a specific interest in healthy aging. Her research in this area focuses on the role of physical activity and sedentary behaviour for physical and mental health. She uses a variety of research methods, including systematic reviews and quantitative and qualitative methods.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Health (University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht, The Netherlands, 1998), Master's degrees in both Human Movement Sciences (Vrije University, Amsterdam, 2001) and Epidemiology (Vrije University, Amsterdam, 2006), and a PhD (Vrije University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, 2007).

Jannique worked part-time as an exercise therapist whilst she completed her degree in human movement sciences (specialisation in rehabilitation medicine, optional courses in personality- and social psychology, psychopathology and sports therapy). She started her scientific career as a librarian and research fellow at the Dutch Institute of Allied Health Care (2002). For her PhD research, she examined the effects of a one year walking program and vitamin B supplementation on cognitive function and physical and mental health in older community dwelling people. Jannique completed her degree in Epidemiology during her PhD research. After being awarded her PhD, Jannique moved to Brisbane, Australia to work as a Research Fellow in Physical Activity and Health in the School of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland. She joined the PCRU at Monash University in October 2011.

Jannique's current projects include:

  • Treatment for problem gambling (randomised controlled trial, data collection starts in 2012)
  • Time use across the retirement transition (prospective observational study, data collection starts in 2012)
  • Pole Walking and health in older adults (survey and randomised controlled trial, data collection starts in 2012)
  • Older adult's understanding of physical activity questionnaires (qualitative study, data collection finalized, writing papers)
