Associate Professor Danielle Mazza
Associate Professor Danielle Mazza has recently published a textbook “Women’s Health in General Practice”. The book sets out current evidence and guidelines where available to assist GPs in their care of women. It is one example of Danielle’s two main academic pursuits; women’s health and implementing evidence into practice. Her previous research has involved both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. She has published in peer reviewed journals, contributed two chapters to the Oxford Textbook of Primary Care and has received awards for her research and presentation of scientific papers in the areas of violence against women, part-time general practice and women’s health. She has been successful in obtaining competitive funding for research and other project work despite working outside of the University sector since 1996. At that time she became Medical Director at Family Planning Victoria and spearheaded the development of a National Curriculum for the Family Planning Certificate. Her interest in professional development later led her to the position of National Director of Quality Assurance and Continuing Education for the RACGP, a position she held from 1999-2001. From 2001-2003, Danielle lived in Malaysia and was Associate Professor in Family Medicine at the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur. After returning to Australia and following the birth of her second child, she resumed part-time general practice and academic work in the Department of General Practice at Monash University where she is currently establishing a research agenda in general practice aspects of the sexual and reproductive health care of women. She is a chief investigator on a Victorian Department of Human Services research project “Development and testing of a tool to identify youth at risk of sexually transmitted infections in primary care”. Current areas of interest include chlamydia screening in general practice, improving compliance with National Cervical Screening Guidelines and assisting women to make informed, autonomous decisions about current and future fertility.
