We're All In This Together - A Free HARU Seminar

Chancellor Alan Finkel

The Healthy Ageing Research Unit (HARU) was delighted to host a public forum on 18 November 2010 entitled "We are all in this together: partnerships in ageing research at Monash University". The aim of this free event was to showcase the exciting work being done by HARU in collaboration with a whole range of people, and to illustrate the value and importance of working in partnership to improve the health and wellbeing of older Victorians. We were honoured to have the Chancellor, Dr. Alan Finkel, to open the proceedings.

Other speakers on the day were from various and diverse background. Dr Ross Barnett talked with us about nurturing and strengthening the inter-organisational relationships and partnerships that we have in aged care in order to improve the knowledge we have about older Australians and how we can improve their care. Dr Marisa Cordella and Hui Huang discussed the implications of continuing language skills and knowledge through the utilisation of older individuals with younger language students during their final years of schooling. Mr Donald McKelvie shared with us his experiences taking part in ageing research, and Jane Fyfield discussed how the Department of Veteran's Affairs utilises research to ensure that the care and care of veterans is informed by a broad and strong evidence base. Dr Alan Petersen of the School of Political and Social Inquiry, discussed the importance of investigating the health and wellbeing of older rural CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) Men, and the benefits and pitfalls of conducting inter-departmental research, and Dr Susan Feldman presented some results from this project.
