2008 FREE SEMINAR SERIES

"Building an environment for an ageing society: Physical and social planning "

The seminar will examine how older people manage change in their physical and social environments, drawing on case studies from Australia and overseas to illustrate different strategies, such as continuity and adaptation, resilience, reconstruction and juggling. This seminar will complement the previous seminar which focused on the structural environment by exploring what is happening at the micro level, amongst older people themselves. The presentations will address a range of topics, from how older people navigate unfamiliar spaces, the evidence around retirement communities through to the challenges of working carers. The seminar will consider how major social themes such as social inclusion and ageing in place can be addressed through policy. The seminar will reflect on how policy, practice, theory and research can work together to address physical and social planning.
