Monash Scholarships

All departments within the School of Biomedical Sciences recognise and reward academic excellence via the awarding of prizes. The current list of prizes awarded to students in various courses by departments is given below.

Awards to Students undertaking units in the Bachelor of Science Course

Anatomy and Developmental Biology

  • David de Krester Prize

    This prize is awarded to the student with the highest aggregate mark in DEV2011, DEV2022, DEV3011 and DEV3022. The prize, valued at $1000, is named after Professor David de Kretser, former head of the Department and Director of the Institute of Reproduction and Development.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • The STUART STONE MEDAL (with $500 cash prize) is awarded at the Honours year level to top student

  • 3rd year Biochemistry student:- Best Biochemistry student (best aggregate over 4 3rd yr BCH units) receives a cash prize of $300

  • 2nd year students:-  Best Biochemistry (BCH2011/22) and Molecular Biology (MOL2011/22) student receive a cash prize of $200 each

Microbiology
  • Ed Westaway Prize – A prize of $250 is awarded annually to the top Microbiology Honours student.

  • CSL PhD Prize – A prize of $250 and a plaque is awarded annually to the best completeing PhD student from the previous year, on the recommendation of the Head of Department. (Based on examiners reports and publications)

  • Solly Faine Prize – A prize of $250 and an engraved medallion is awarded to the student with the highest mark in MIC3990 unit.
  • Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM) Prize – this award is made to the top student in both second and third year Microbiology, on the recommendation of the Head of Department.

Pharmacology

  • Boura Prize For the top honours student

  • Bentley Prize For the top 3rd year science student who goes on to do honours

Physiology

  • G D Thorburn Prize In recognition of the contribution of the former head of the Department of Physiology, Professor Geoffrey Donald Thorburn, this prize to the value of $200, is awarded annually to the best student in fourth-year level Physiology, either in the Faculty of Science BSc(Hons) or the Faculty of Medicine BmedSci course

  • Physiology Prize This prize, to the value of $200, is awarded annually to the best student enrolled on twenty-four points of third-year physiology subjects offered in the Faculty of Science.

  • MacLab Prize This prize, to the value of $300, is awarded annually to the best student enrolled in sixteen points of second-year level physiology subjects offered in the Faculty of Science.

  • Mayne Health Prize for Clinical Excellence (across all years of the course)

  • The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists Prize for the best project in selective studies in medical imaging
