At its completion, the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP) will consist of three separate buildings located on the western side of Clayton campus, in between the Ring Road and the existing science buildings.
Building 75, known as STRIP 1, currently houses groups including the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories and the Micromon Genomics Facility.
Buildings 76 and 77 are now under construction in a process known as ‘STRIP Stage 2’. When completed in March 2009, they will stand as two four-storey buildings connected by a central core building, and will link to Building 75 via a walkway.
The School of Biomedical Sciences and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute will share the 17,200 square metres of floor space in the new STRIP buildings, with approximately 540 staff and students moving in for research activities. The School’s teaching facilities will remain in their current buildings.
STRIP accommodation will include central administration offices, research offices and laboratories, with their generic design making the space adaptable to almost any research group.

Construction
Monash contracted construction company Hooker Cockram to undertake the STRIP project, and building commenced in January 2007.
Building 76 is estimated to be completed by late 2008, and a further three months will be spent preparing it for occupation in December. This involves Monash setting up loose furniture, information technology installations, audio visual installations, signage and some fixed equipment. User relocation from existing buildings will also be taken into account.
Construction of Building 77 is estimated to be completed in December 2008, again followed by a necessary break of three months in which furnishings will be organised for occupation in March 2009.
At 11am on each day of the project, a camera positioned at a high vantage point
takes an automatic photograph. This time-lapse animation captures each week
of construction between March 2007 and January 2008.
Environmentally Sustainable Design
Complying with the University’s environmental policy and aims, the new STRIP buildings will all incorporate various levels of intelligent, environmentally sustainable design, taking into account: building orientation, internal planning, maximum natural light, rainwater collection, and carefully selected building and paving materials.
Hooker Cockram maintains a site-specific Environmental Management Plan for the project. The plan promotes: minimisation of resource consumption, use of recyclable resources, a healthy non-toxic construction and work environment, maximum use of natural lighting, and smart management of residual waste material. On a monthly basis, Hooker Cockram reports on the quantity of materials removed from the site and the method of their disposal, including recycling.
