Particularly with the advent of Biotechnology and Genetic Manipulation, new OH&S issues and accreditation standards have emerged. Universities and large organizations employ OH&S Officers to ensure compliance current safety legislation, standards and codes of practice, in particular the Gene Technology Act. Their roles can involve inspections, representations on institutional committees and management of OH&S auditing requirements.

While undergraduate and postgraduate courses exist to qualify for these roles, however lab experience often is regarded highly and formal qualifications can often be attained while employed.
