Angelina Mercuri
Radiation Therapist – Austin Health
Angelina completed her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash University in 2002. She qualified as a Radiation Therapist by studying a two year Masters of Radiation Therapy.
In her role, Angelina uses high energy radiation to treat cancer and other diseases. More than 50 to 60 percent of cancer patients use this treatment to kill cancers cells.
As a member of the Radiation Oncology team at the Austin, Angelina designs and administers radiation treatments to patients. She develops a program for patients by examining scans. Angelina explains the procedure and positions and stabilises the patient. She operates radiation equipment and monitors patient progress.
Angelina chose her career path in her final year of study during a practical class. She committed to work experience in the area before deciding to begin her Masters in Radiation Therapy.
“Two things I love about my job are the strong rapport I build with my patients over the six to seven week period of treatment, and the problem solving skills I use to design their treatments,” Angelina says.
