Marilyn Baird completed her training as a radiographer in England and since qualification in 1971 has practiced as a radiographer in England, New Zealand and Australia. From January 1985 to December 1996 Marilyn was a member of the medical radiations group at RMIT teaching radiography and coordinated the radiography stream of the medical radiations degree and its clinical program. In January 1997 Marilyn moved to Monash University to establish the Unit of Radiography and Medical Imaging later to become the Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging, and implement Australia's first 4-year degree course in Radiography and Medical Imaging which began in February 1998.

Marilyn is currently the convenor of the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging and teaches radiographic methods in second year. As well, she is the coordinator of the four year clinical program and contributes to the research projects offered in year 4 of the undergraduate course. Marilyn has also been responsible for the creation of other courses within medical radiations offered by the Department including the Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound, Australia's first graduate entry program in radiation therapy and the first Master of Radiographic Practice. Following the implementation of the Master of Radiation Therapy in July 2003, the Department's name was changed to the one in current use.

Marilyn has many research interests including educational curricula for health professions, clinical teaching and learning, the human aspect of practice including practitioner' attitudes, values and beliefs, role extension for practitioners and the gap between published research evidence in medical imaging and the reality of practice.

In 2001 Marilyn was awarded the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Silver Jubilee prize for teaching excellence. In 2004 Marilyn was the sole recipient of the Vice-Chancellor's medal for distinguished teaching. In July 2002 Marilyn was appointed by the Minister of Health to the position of Chair of the Medical Radiation Technologists Board of Victoria which she held until the dissolution of the Board in June 2007. In July 2007 Marilyn was appointed by the Minister of Health to the position of President of the Medical Radiation Practitioners Board of Victoria. Marilyn was reappointed to this position in 2010.

In late January 2012 Marilyn was appointed Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
