Research Activities

Our research is primarily concerned with circadian rhythms, controlled by the internal biological clock that regulates sleep and waking. We are also interested in environmental factors that affect circadian rhythms (e.g. light), and the effects of restricted sleep on neurobehavioural functioning. Research projects may involve young adults with normal sleep patterns, the elderly, people with sleep disorders such as insomnia, or shift workers.

Current Research Projects

  • Effects of sleep restriction on alertness and neurobehavioural performance
  • Acute Alerting Effects of Daytime Exposure to Light
  • Managing and Treating Fatigue and Sleep Disturbance Following Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Drowsiness while driving in night shift workers and sleep disorder patients
  • Assessment of circadian phase for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep phase insomnia
  • Mood and Sleep-Wake Changes Following Administration of MDMA (‘Ecstasy’)
  • Identification of Sleep Disorders in General Practice
  • Randomised controlled trial of a light intervention to enhance alertness and performance in night shiftworkers
