Dog Ownership Questionnaire

Explanatory Statement for Research Participants completing the Questionnaire

Dear Participant

Thank you for responding to our advertisement and for your interest in participating in a survey conducted by Monash University, situated in Melbourne.

Prior to commencing the survey, please read the following:

  1. Monash University is conducting a study of Reasons for Dog ownerhip. This questionnaire takes approximately 30 minutes to complete online and is designed to research information on the general public's view on dog ownership.
  2. The current research project will contribute to the body of knowledge about the role dogs may play in the lives of humans, and their contribution to society as a whole
  3. In order to be eligible to participate, you must be at least 18 years old, and live in Australia.
  4. The questionnaire is completely anonymous and you will not be required to provide any details that would enable you to be identified.
  5. There are no foreseeable risks to you due to your involvement in this study.
  6. You will not receive payment for participating in this study.
  7. Participation in this study is completely voluntary and participants can withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or prejudice.
  8. Should you withdraw from the study after commencing the questionnaire, any data relating to you will be destroyed.
  9. Following our collection of data, the results will be stored in the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine at the Caulfield Campus of Monash University
  10. Results will be made available to the general public in a generalised form on the Animal Welfare Website. Results will also be published in a journal article and PhD thesis, however, all sources of information will remain anonymous at all times
  11. This study has been approved by the human ethics committee of Monash University in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council's guidelines. Participants are free to discuss their participation in this study with project staff (contactable on 03 9903 1144). If participants would like to speak to an officer of the University not involved in the study, they may contact the Ethics Officer on 03 9905 2052.
