Effects of maternal alcohol consumption on fetal development

There is no agreed-upon "safe" level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

Vulnerability of the fetal brain and small resistance blood vessels

By investigating the effects of maternal ethanol exposure during late gestation in the fetal sheep, Kelly hopes to better understand the effects of maternal drinking and the mechanisms by which ethanol affects fetal growth and health. Evidence so far suggests that the brain is particularly vulnerable to injury. Kelly is also investigating, for the first time, effects of ethanol on fetal blood vessel structure and function.
