Dr Joanna Kemp obtained her PhD from the University of Melbourne in the field of vaccine research. She commenced her post-doctoral career at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, joining the Signal Transduction Laboratory. There she studied how Lyn kinase affects the function of dendritic cells in the context of asthma. Part of the project also involved determining the role of Lyn in human disease. In 2005, Dr Kemp joined Prof Els Meeusen’s laboratory, studying the immune response to gastrointestinal parasites. This included the evaluation of a prototype vaccine against Haemonchus contortus, commonly known as the barber’s pole worm.

Dr Kemp’s post-doctoral projects kindled her enthusiasm for Th2 immunology, in the context of both asthma and parasite infection. Her studies also led to her developing a keen interest in how a cell interprets the extracellular signals it receives and reacts to these stimuli.Dr Kemp has been involved in the supervision of a number of students, including those completing their Masters, Honours and summer projects.
