Master of Rural Health (Research)

Introduction

Rural health research is an important and distinctive area of multi-disciplinary endeavour. The School of Rural Health offers a Master of Rural Health (Research) program for students from any discipline wanting to undertake research in rural health. The Master of Rural Health (Research) is a research degree for which candidates are required to submit a major thesis for examination. The thesis will communicate the results of research carried out by the candidate, under supervision. The thesis will demonstrate the candidate's ability to carry out high quality independent research on a rural health topic.

Aims/objectives

Students who have completed the course will demonstrate a thorough understanding of relevant research techniques in their field through a review of the relevant literature. They will demonstrate their ability, under supervision, to apply relevant research techniques to their chosen field of study. Students will be able to present high quality written work suitable for publication in appropriate scholarly journals. Students will be able to critically evaluate both their own and others’ written work in their chosen field.

Structure of program

The Master of Rural Health (Research) is a 100% research degree. The thesis will be approximately 40,000 - 60,000 words.

Length of course

The course must be completed in two years full-time or four years part-time study.

Admission requirements

Candidates for the Master of Rural Health (Research) will generally have a Bachelor's degree with honours, an MBBS, Graduate or Postgraduate Diploma or approved equivalent qualifications. They are expected to have achieved a class I or class IIA honours in a relevant discipline or equivalent. They will need to produce evidence of research experience and/or relevant work experience.

In exceptional circumstances, a student who does not meet these entry requirements may be allowed to enrol directly into MRuralHlth (Research) if he/she has demonstrated an ability to undertake a research project at master's level. In recommending such a candidate, Faculty Research Degrees Committee should be satisfied that the applicant has demonstrated potential to successfully complete the study.

Fee structure

Master of Rural Health (Research) students may be eligible for a Commonwealth Research Training Scheme (RTS) place. Under this scheme, students will be HECS exempt and are only required to pay an amenities fee. International students can only enrol on a full time basis the fees are $19,500 per annum (2004), $21,500 per annum (2005).
