Department of Paediatrics

The Department of Paediatrics offers education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

Undergraduate education is offered as an integral part of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree (Unit MED 4082). Projects are also available for BMedSc, BSc (Honours) and BBioMedSc (Honours). Short term projects for Medical Student Research Electives (for both Australian and International students) are also available. Paediatrics is also part of Year C in the Postgraduate Medical Degree. Postgraduate research degrees of Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) are offered to suitably qualified graduates.  Most Rresearch is carried out through the Ritchie Centre for Baby Health Research and a full list of projects and potential supervisors are available at www.monashinstitute.org

MED4082

The Children's Health undergraduate program is situated within MED4082 (Women's and Children's Health) of 4th year and is a nine week term. It is also available as a six week pre-internship selective in the final year (Year 5) of the MBBS program.

MED4082 may be undertaken in a wide variety of clinical sites across Victoria and also Malaysia. Specific details of individual programs vary across sites however the learning objectives and curriculum are shared. Learning activities include patient clerking, involvement in clinical patient management, structured learning activities, tutorials and case-based learning. These are supplemented by Directed Learning Activities which provide a framework for the Children's Health curriculum.

The course is a practically orientated introduction to Paediatric Medicine and Surgery and includes the management of common illness and disease in neonates, infants, children and adolescents. By the end of the term, the student is expected to understand and recognise

  1. the process of normal growth and development.
  2. the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of common and important diseases of children.
  3. the skills required to diagnose and manage these conditions.
  4. appropriate communication, interpersonal and professional skills for hospital and community clinical settings;
  5. legal and ethical issues relevant to the practice of medicine;
  6. the principles of team-work, and the role of doctors in clinical teams
