Dr Rombauts completed his PhD at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He subsequently joined the Leuven Institute for Fertility and Embryology, where he collaborated with Prof S. Gordts and Prof I. Brosens on the development of the Transvaginal HydroLaparoscopy (THL).

Dr Rombauts joined the Department in 1999. Dr Rombauts' current research interests include the mechanisms regulating the development and progression of endometriosis. He is also working on the role of follistatin and activin in ovarian follicle maturation.

Dr Rombauts has clinical appointments in the Reproductive Biology Unit to the Women's Health Program, Southern Healthcare Network at Monash Medical Centre. In particular, his clinical interests include the treatment of endometriosis and infertility, including the use of reproductive microsurgery, endoscopic surgery and IVF techniques

Dr Rombauts is also an associate of Monash IVF.
