Palliative Care Research Team

Meet the Team

  • Prof. Margaret O'Connor AM - Team Leader and the inaugural Vivian Bullwinkel Chair in Palliative Care Nursing.Working from a strategic plan, the research agenda for the Chair and the Team concentrates on a few areas, in keeping with the national strategic research directions of Palliative Care Australia. Chosen areas of research are service system issues and policy in palliative care, care of veterans, and cultural aspects of end of life care. All research projects endeavour to support research in clinical areas (especially in reflecting questions from clinicians in partner organisations). All projects have sought to engage at least one of the partners. We have targeted a mix of research, in terms of funding sources and levels of funding requested.
  • Dr Susan Lee is an NHMRC Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, a two year fellowship commenced in 2008. Her project is titled Developing and Measuring Palliative Care Decision Making Skill.  She is a senior lecturer in the School and maintains some teaching and research supervision. She was Chair of the Scientific Committee for the Palliative Care Nurses Association inaugural Conference 2006, and a member of the Scientific Committee for the conference in 2008. She was a member of the Scientific Committee for Palliative Care Australia’s Biennial Conference 2007 and is also a Director of the Board of Management of Peninsula Hospice Service. In addition, Susan is a member of the local educators group that facilitates continuing and community education in palliative care and represents the Chair on the Southern Metropolitan Regional Consortium.
  • Dr Louise Peters has substantial experience in palliative care service management, staff development and as a project manager in the area of palliative care.  Her PhD thesis (2001) investigated the quality of life of cancer patients receiving palliative care. Louise was a member of the Scientific Committee for the International Palliative Care Nursing Research Conference, Prato Italy 2004. In her current role she is involved with conducting research and management of various aspects of research projects, in particular the design, ethical approvals and writing.
  • Kaori Shimoinaba is a NHMRC Postgraduate Public Health Scholar for 18 months commenced in 2008.  Her research title is “Staff Grief and Support Systems for Health Care Professionals Working in Palliative Care”.  She is a lecturer and a program coordinator for Japanese Palliative Care Programs in the School.  She has interests in cross cultural palliative education and grief issues for health care professionals working in the area of palliative care.
  • Katrina Recoche joined the team in 2006 as part of the Palliative Care Curriculum for Undergraduates site pilot project. Katrina is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and has over twenty years experience in palliative care nursing, particularly in community-based service delivery.
  • Dr Heather Tan   who joined the team as a Research Fellow in 2008 has submitted her PhD thesis for examination. Her project investigated the use of a family meeting model for the psycho-social and spiritual care of palliative patients and their family members.  During her candidature she was supported by a full time scholarship, a grant for research costs and travel grants that enabled her to undertake training overseas. She has a background in education, counseling (especially in the areas of grief and palliative care) and pastoral care, having both taught at the post graduate level and engaged in clinical practice.

Interested in studies in palliative care?

The school of Nursing & Midwifery has major studies in palliative care at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Nursing levels. In a flexible program, course pathways are individually planned with students during a career path planning discussion. Options to undertake coursework or combinations of coursework and research are available.

Further information can be found at www.med.monash.edu.au/nursing/postgraduate/

We have a growing group of PhD students undertaking studies in topics like:
  • What happens on the day of death in a palliative care unit?
  • Issues affecting access to palliative care services for elderly Chinese people in Australia:
  • East and far east Gippsland rural residential aged care facilities, is their capacity to meet residents' palliative care needs realistic? A critical ethnographic investigation;
  • A study of the implementation of a palliative approach in a residential aged care facility using a practice development framework;
  • Issues affecting access to a palliative care for Indian people in Australia;
  • The graduate nurse experience in palliative care.

Further information on research degrees is available at www.mgrs.monash.edu.au
