Midwifery

The School of Nursing and Midwifery currently offers midwifery education to Division 1 nurses. The focus of this education includes: prenatal midwifery, health promotion and education; midwifery during labour and birth; postpartum and home midwifery, contraception counselling; and care of the sick or premature newborn. Students will also have the opportunity to explore in depth an area of midwifery that has particular relevance or interest to them or their individual practice setting.

This course is designed to prepare students with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills necessary to practice midwifery in a multidisciplinary context. Skills for evaluating evidence for best midwifery practice, as well as for development of self, others and the profession, are also features f this preparation. Students are exposed to a wide variety of perspectives and environments in order to help them develop the ability to think critically about the role of the midwife in maternity care setting. The course is accredited by the Nurses Board of Victoria.

The course is provided in four (3-5 days) on-campus study schools, held at the Gippsland campus, together with online and self directed learning modules. Students are required to be employed part-time in a clinical setting that provides midwifery care to women and their families across regional, rural and metropolitan Victoria.

Entry Requirements

Students must have a bachelors degree, a current registered nurse practising certificate and at least one year of professional clinical experience. Students must have part time employment in a participating hospital.
