Description

This course offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery will provide a professional midwifery qualification for registered nurses and builds on the knowledge and skills acquired when undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent.   The aim of the Master of Clinical Midwifery (pre-registration) is to produce a midwife who is a reflective practitioner, able to demonstrate a person-centred approach to their care, and who is a highly capable individual able to work in partnership with the interdisciplinary team.  Students select either a coursework option or coursework with a research project.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the graduate is expected to:

  • demonstrate competency to practise as a midwife at a beginning level in a variety of maternity settings in accordance with the ANMC National competency standards for the midwife (2006);
  • reflect attitudes which are congruent with the philosophy of valuing women, women-centred care, and woman-midwife partnership;
  • work both as a primary carer and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals in providing comprehensive care through women’s reproductive life;
  • demonstrate personal and professional attributes for the enhancement of self and the midwifery profession;
  • demonstrate critical and reflective thinking and decision making skills;
  • incorporate the principles of lifelong learning into midwifery practice;
  • identify clinical problems and utilize evidence based practice models to research them;
  • demonstrate skills in undertaking research including planning, development and implementation of a research project under supervision;
  • undertake leadership roles in midwifery practice in a range of settings promoting the role of midwifery in collaborative practice within the multidisciplinary team;
  • demonstrate knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for collaborative practice in regional and referral centres, midwifery led maternity services in a range of settings, and for development of peers and services within maternity units;
  • be eligible for endorsement as a midwife on the division 1 register with Nurses Board Victoria.

Structure

This course can be taken as coursework only or a combination of coursework and a 24-point research project. Students are encouraged to discuss the range of study options with the course coordinator, who will advise on individual programs of study.

Requirements

Students complete units only, or units and a research project from the list below to a total of 72 points. Units are all 12 points.

Semester one units

  • MID9001 Woman midwife partnerships
  • GHS9841 Research methods and issues **This unit is a pre-requisite for undertaking the research project.

Semester two units

  • MID9002: Extending midwife partnerships
  • NUR9214: Advanced therapeutic interaction in nursing OR Research project*

Semester three units

  • MID9003 Midwifery and maternity in context
  • MID9005 Advancing midwifery practice  OR Research project*

Please note that this is a prescribed sequence.

Research Project

Taken over two semesters commencing in 2nd semester-24cp

Progression to further studies

Students who complete this course and achieve a high distinction in the research methods unit (GHS9841) and the research project may qualify for admission into higher degrees by research (HDR) including the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy, among others.

Professional recognition

 The course is subject to approval/accredited by the Nurses Board of Victoria. Students meeting the course requirements will be eligible to apply for registration in Division 1 of the register as a Midwife by the Nurses Board of Victoria (NBV) or its equivalent.

Minimum entrance requirements

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate nursing degree of at least 144 Monash University credit points (three standard full-time years) of a university degree

Hold Division 1 nursing registration with Nurses Board of Victoria.

Entry requirements for International Students

English requirements for international students

Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree in nursing within 5 years prior to commencement of the course

Hold Division 1 nursing registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria

A minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 6.5 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking; TOEFL 580 with a TWE score of at least 4.5; Computer-based TOEFL, a minimum score of 237 with an ER of at least 4.5; or an internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of 90 with at least 22 in the written section, and no section lower than 20.Monash University Language Centre or another program approved as equivalent
