Is schizophrenia a cost of the evolving human brain?

This is a free lecture open to all Monash staff, students and members of the general public. The lecture is held by the Monash Neuroscience and Mental Health Network, in association with the Australian Neuroscience Society.

NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, Mental Health Research Institute & Professor of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne.
The cause of schizophrenia remains unknown.  Recent developments argue that some of the symptoms of schizophrenia arise because of the human brain has become so complex it has problems supplying its own need for energy.  Importantly, drugs that may reverse this problem may be on the horizon.  This talk will outline why schizophrenia may result from a brain energy deficit and how drugs may be able to reverse such a deficiency.
Prof Brian Dean is currently a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Rebecca L. Cooper Research Laboratories at the Mental Health Research Institute, Melbourne and holds an honorary position as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne.  He has now published more than over 170 papers on the neuropsychopharmacology of psychotropic drugs and the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorders.

Australian Neuroscience Society – Victorian Neuroscience Networking event

This event is open to all Monash staff and students, undertaking research in the area of neuroscience or mental health.

Date: Monday 14th March, 2011
Time: 4:00-6:00 pm
Venue: Executive Lounge, Level 1, Alan Gilbert Building, Grattan St Parkville

This is an opportunity to network with neuroscience researchers from other universities and organisations, in an informal environment. Refreshments will be provided. Displays will be present from a number of key neuroscience research organisations.

Please email joanne.britto@florey.edu.au, by Friday 4th March. If there is sufficient demand, the Australian Neuroscience Society and Monash Neuroscience and Mental Health Network will provide a free bus from the Monash University Clayton campus to this event. There will however be limited seats, so please contact lisa.hutton@monash.edu to reserve a seat on the bus.
