Central & Eastern Clinical School
The Central & Eastern Clinical School is situated at the Alfred Medical Research and Educational Precinct. (AMREP) It is formed from the staff and students of the Departments of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Medicine (Alfred Hospital), Pathology and Immunology, Surgery (Alfred Hospital), Forensic Medicine (Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine) and Medicine (Box Hill Hospital). AMREP is home to the Van Cleef/Roet Centre, the Baker Heart Research Institute and the Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research and Public Health.
The Central & Eastern Clinical School encourages multidisciplinary research across previously separate fields and also aims to incorporate its research products into clinical practice.
School of Biomedical Sciences
The School of Biomedical Sciences (SOBS) encompasses elite students, researchers, laboratories, and state-of-the-art research facilities to form a world-class centre for biomedical research that transcends a spectrum of medical and complementary disciplines. It comprises all staff and students in the departments of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Radiography and Medical Imaging.
School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine
The School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine (SPPPM) comprises the Department of Psychology and the Department of Psychological Medicine, as well as affiliated Institutes and Centres.
The School is recognised a leader in the areas of developmental psychology and psychiatry; forensic mental health; health psychology and psychiatry; neuroscience and neuropsychology, and schizophrenia and depression.
Southern Clinical School
The Southern Clinical School encompasses various hospitals and affiliates. These include Monash Medical Centre and associated clinical services, Monash Institute of Medical Research, Prince Henry's Institute for Medical Research and Monash Institute for Neurological Disease. The Department of Medicine at Monash Medical Centre is a centre for research and biomedical education.
Other University Faculties
Engineering
Biomedical engineering covers the wide range of technology used in health care including diagnostic instrumentation, drug delivery systems, medical imaging, and rehabilitation devices.
Education
Research areas include applied behavioural psychology of child anxiety, fears and phobias: Mental heatlh problems of children and youth in childhood posttraumatic stress disorder, and adolescent depression.
Information Technology
Has research interests in speech perception.
Science
Physics- Physics underpins modern technology and has transformed our society. The School of Physics has research interests in methods to process images associated with medical imaging.
Biological Sciences- The School of Biological Sciences is a centre for basic research on biological organisation, including molecular and cell biology, genetics, development, physiology, ecology and evolution.
Victorian College of Pharmacy
VCP has a history of best practice in drug development and health advancement and has a reputation for innovation, particularly in the areas of formulation science and medicinal chemistry.
Research Institutes
Prince Henry's Institute for Medical Research
Prince Henry's Institute, conducts world standard research and clinical programs in the field of endocrinology (the study of hormones) in health and disease. When hormones reach a cell they bind and cause many different effects in order to control the function of that cell.
Monash Institute of Medical Research
Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) unites the talents of researchers, clinicians and biotechnology experts from a range of biomedical fields. Its vision is to enhance human health and quality of life by major research innovation and discovery in biology, medicine, biotechnology and health services research.
With scientific expertise in reproductive biology, prostate health, functional genomics, assisted reproduction, stem cells, inflammatory diseases, growth and development of babies and women's health. MIMR's interdisciplinary approach now extends to collaborations in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gastroenterology, neurosciences and respiratory and sleep medicine.
National Trauma Research Institute
The National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI), incorporating the Victorian Trauma Foundation Centre for Trauma Research & Practice (VTF-CTRP) at The Alfred is the first Institute of its kind in Australia. It aims to prevent or limit the disabling effects of traumatic injuries through research and education in trauma care.
