Dr Michael Azari has a strong interest in regenerative neuroscience, in particular in the area of neurotrauma, stroke, and Motor Neuron Disease. His work has focused on endogenous regenerative mechanisms within the central nervous system (CNS) following injury and disease. Furthermore, he has worked on elucidation of mechanisms by which this endogenous response to injury can be modulated. Particularly, the connection between cell death and inflammation and the viability of mature CNS cells as well as activation of endogenous neural stem cells. He is the author of 15 publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Azari completed a BAppSc(Chiropractic) degree at RMIT University, and a BSc(Hons) in the Physiology department of Monash University. He then completed a PhD in neuroscience at Monash University in 2005, and subsequently attracted a prestigious postdoctoral research training fellowship from the NHMRC in that year. He has taught at RMIT, Monash and Melbourne Universities and has so far co-supervised two Honours and one PhD student.
