About Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL)
Established in 2005, Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories, (MISCL), is comprised of world class researchers who seek to integrate research into stem cells and immunology for the development of novel clinical treatments and the understanding of basic biological systems.
Investigators at MISCL study all forms of stem cells including embryonic, newborn (umbilical cord and placenta), adult and patient-specific stem cells and their collective applications in the generation of new cells and tissues for treatment of many of the most devastating diseases. The research includes directed differentiation of stem cells to form blood, heart, pancreas, thymus, germ cells; and repair and regeneration of immune, respiratory, kidney, spinal and neural tissues. Interests also include using the natural anti-inflammatory and repair-inducing properties of ‘adult' mesenchymal and amniotic epithelial cells, particularly in the repair of chronic injury to the kidney and CNS and following severe treatments such as chemotherapy.
A unique feature of MISCL is research into the immune system to induce transplantation tolerance to foreign (non-self) stem cell therapies. The immune system is also studied for novel strategies to treat autoimmunity, cancer and reversal of immunodeficiency.
MISCL has a strong international reputation and extensive collaborative interactions in immunology, stem cells and tissue repair. It is closely allied to the other Monash departments focusing on development, genomic and epigenetic science, immunology and transplantation medicine. MISCL has over 40 honours and postgraduate research students, demonstrating our commitment to training the next generation of stem cell scientists. MISCL is a centre of research excellence within the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, and attracts competitive research support from national and international funding bodies, government and commercial partnerships. MISCL attracts many overseas visitors and nucleates research collaborations both locally and internationally.
