The International Leptospirosis Society Inc. (ILS) was formed in 1994 to promote knowledge on leptospirosis through the organisation of regional and global leptospirosis meetings.

Vale Chris Everard
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Chris Everard passed away in June 2012, a short while after his 80th birthday. Chris was born in India and educated in England, but he spent much of his adult life working in the tropics as an external staff member of the U.K. Medical Research Council. Chris was a zoologist by training and worked first in Nigeria, then from 1968 in Trinidad, Grenada and finally in Barbados. Chris was a fixture for many years in the leptospirosis community and his role in the understanding of leptospirosis in the southern Caribbean was fundamental. His enthusiasm was well known and his colleagues in Barbados were never surprised when he arrived at the lab with fresh road kill for culture! MRC rules for overseas staff required Chris to retire from active research at the age of 60, long before he was ready. Unfortunately Chris and Jenny’s plans for their retirement were much constrained by Jenny’s illness, and they did not travel to many of the recent meetings. We have lost another good friend. Our condolences are with his family.

Taxonomic Subcommittee
At its 2002 meeting, the Committee on the Taxonomy of Leptospira of the International Union of Microbiological Societies approved the following nomenclature for serovars of Leptospira. Genus and species must of course be italicized, with the serovar name not italicized and with an upper case first letter. Members are requested to adhere to this official nomenclature and to insist upon it in all papers they review.
For example:
Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae
L. borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo
