The Department of Microbiology contains more than 150 personnel, and is part of the School of Biomedical Science within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science at Monash University. The department is housed mainly in building 76 on the Clayton Campus, but also has laboratories and offices in the adjacent buildings 75 and 53.

Research in the Cooke laboratory focuses broadly on understanding the ways in which parasites of red blood cells cause disease and death in humans or animals and how we might develop new drugs or vaccines to protect or prevent them.
