What is a simulated patient required to do?
Depending on the portrayed role, simulated patients may be asked to:
- Memorise a patient’s history and provide the information to the student as per the role instructions
- Memorise the explanation given by students and be ready to repeat that explanation if asked by the student
- Be examined (non-invasively) by a medical student under supervision of a tutor.
What are the most important requirements that we look for when recruiting simulated patients?
- English language proficiency (both verbal and written)
- Confidentiality – the role you are playing is for examination purposes, it is vitally important that you keep all documents pertaining to the role confidential and do not discuss them with any third party
- Reliability – we rely on Sim Patients coming in on the day of the exam prepared and ready for the role
- Punctuality – punctuality is vital as exams are co-ordinated across multiple campuses and involve hundreds of students and staff. Additional training is also sometimes offered on the day of the exams
- Ability to simulate the patient role as directed
What is involved in becoming a Simulated Patient
- Attending an Introduction to the Simulated Patient Program Training Session
- Having your details recorded on a confidential Simulated Patient registry
- Depending on the role required, you may be invited to participate in end of year medical student examinations – this can be from a few hours to a full day. Training will be provided on the Clayton Campus prior to the day
- You may be invited to participate in student teaching sessions requiring simulated patients - variable times
- You can choose to have as much or as little involvement as you like!
