Undergraduate

The Department of Medicine(MMC) participates in many undergraduate and honours medical programs. It participates heavily in the following courses:

Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery

The Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery is a double degree designed as an integrated structure, incorporating four themes, including interdisciplinary units taught by staff from various Departments across the Faculty. The basic medical and behavioural sciences are introduced within interdisciplinary units and in all of these units, there is a major focus on clinical issues through clinical case studies.

The 1st two years of the curriculum is largely campus-based, with an opportunity for clinical placements, both locally and rurally. Years 3-5 are conducted in clinical settings, generally hospitals and practices across metropolitan and rural Victoria. Year 5 provides opportunity for elective and selective studies.

Bachelor of Medical Science

The degree provides a solid foundation in biomedical sciences leading to a research-based honours year. Students are taught by leading experts in the biomedical sciences and gain the skills necessary to understand and investigate human biology and health.

Graduates may work in medical research, biotechnology, genetic engineering, neurosciences, molecular biology, reproductive biology and technology, anatomical and forensic sciences. Graduates will also be well prepared to pursue higher studies in research and graduate-entry programs.

Bachelor of Medical Science

This degree provides students enrolled in the MB BS course with an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of aspects of medical science and to pursue the study of this field through research.

During the course students undertake research activities supervised through a Department of the Faculty and complete a minor thesis. Students resume the MBBS course after completion of the BMedSc year.

Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics

The degree provides the practical skills and expertise to practise in dietetics. While the context of the course is the Australian health care system, the skills, knowledge and competencies learnt are transferable to other countries.

Most graduates work in the hospital sector, with many specialising in particular clinical areas. Graduates also work in community nutrition, the food industry, private practice, in public health and the public sector, and in research and education.
